Federal Investment in Literacy and Educational Innovation
The federal government’s recent investment in literacy and educational innovation reflects growing recognition that student success begins long before college matriculation. Literacy gaps formed in early education reverberate throughout the educational pipeline, shaping readiness, retention, and degree completion.
The Education Innovation and Research grants prioritize evidence-based interventions, community partnerships, and scalable models—aligning closely with higher education’s increasing emphasis on data-informed practice.
Colleges and universities have an opportunity to engage beyond traditional boundaries, collaborating with K–12 systems to strengthen teacher preparation, support family engagement, and align expectations across sectors. TRIO programs, which straddle secondary and postsecondary spaces, are natural partners in this work.
Literacy is not solely a K–12 concern. It is a college completion issue, a workforce issue, and a matter of equity. Federal investment signals progress, but sustained impact will depend on cross-sector leadership and long-term commitment.
